Counting Carbon on Campus: Not Just Fun and Games
CALOR’s first project, the CARBONZO kiosk “carbon-offset ATM”, was designed to raise awareness among college students about the environmental impact of carbon dioxide
emissions. To help explain complex carbon pricing concepts in terms of daily campus life, CALOR developed the prototype for a portable kiosk that allowed students to purchase “Carbon Offset Credits” from Carbonfund, a national environmental non-profit organization.
The client, designSmart of Charlotte, NC, hired CALOR to create the ATM-like unit, name the project, research and write a “Request For Proposal” to find vendors with the specialized capability to construct the prototype and install “gaming” software. CARBONZO units are now activated on major US college campuses nationwide.
